Disposing of medications is very important and knowing how to do so safely and effective can decrease the risk of health problems within others.

Disposing at home

Disposing at home can be dangerous and should be done in a specific way

  • Remove medications from original containers and mix with inedible, unappealing substances (cat litter, coffee grounds, etc)
  • Put into a closed container to prevent spilling
  • Take off all labels of original containers that share anything about your identity

Did You Know?

  • Children and pets can ingest unnecessary medications that are in the home.
  • Improper disposal of medications can harm the public water system and the environment.
  • Out-of-date medications usually become less effective.  Taking discontinued medications along with current medications can be harmful.
