Disposing of medications is very important and knowing how to do so safely and effective can decrease the risk of health problems within others.
How to dispose properly:
- Drug take-back programs hosted through local pharmacies, hospitals, and law enforcement agencies
- National take back events: sponsored by U.S. Drug Administration Administration (DEA)
- At home disposal (see below how to properly)

- Please consult with your doctor for syringes and other medical items
Disposing at home
Disposing at home can be dangerous and should be done in a specific way
- Remove medications from original containers and mix with inedible, unappealing substances (cat litter, coffee grounds, etc)
- Put into a closed container to prevent spilling
- Take off all labels of original containers that share anything about your identity

- Children and pets can ingest unnecessary medications that are in the home.
- Improper disposal of medications can harm the public water system and the environment.
- Out-of-date medications usually become less effective. Taking discontinued medications along with current medications can be harmful.
